White Flag: Lights Finds Distopia In New Music Video

Canadian electronic artist Lights has just premiered the post-apocalyptic video for her synth-pop anthem and new single "Banner." The cinematic clip finds our electro chanteuse wandering a distopian wasteland until she stumbles across a group of weary wanderers riding in a beat-down truck. After a run-in with some nasty outlaws, Lights proves that sometimes it's better to wave the white flag than to fight. The video is gritty and features a dusty palette with lots of muted colors, a perfect contrast to the shiny electro-pop track. Check it out below:

Heartsrevolution At Le Baron (2/6)

It's been a long time coming for Heartsrevolution, the little punk band that could. And while it's been a rocky road on the way to releasing their debut album, 'Ride Or Die,' it seems that the wait will be well worth it in the end. How do I know? Well, a few nights ago I was invited to Le Baron NYC - the new uber-exclusive nightclub by French club-owner and tastemaker Andre Saraiva - by my girl Lo to check out her first show in over two years!

She was sweet enough to put me and a few friends on the guest list to come see her perform and cover the event for Electrocutie, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel just a little bit cool when the doorman parted that velvet rope for me. (After all, Le Baron is LE place to be these days!) Inside, the chic little three-floor Parisian-based club and lounge was bathed with sultry red lights and Chinese ornaments, wallpaper, and lanterns, giving off the exotic feel of an old era opium den.

As my little group made our way to the stage (at a puny 5'3, I can't see anything unless I'm front and center) I ran into my girl Neon Hitch, proving again that Le Baron is clearly bringing in a great crowd. After grabbing a delicious French martini for myself, and after exploring the premises for a bit, I found my spot and got comfortable. Not soon after 10 PM, Heartsrevolution took to the stage.

The trio (Ben on keys, programming, and guitar, Prince Terrence on drums, and Lo on vocals) treated the crowd to a full set of new material, throwing in a few older gems and fan favorites like "CYOA" here and there. While I had anticipated more of a showcase with maybe three to four tracks tops, the set was surprisingly long - and very satisfying! New tracks like "Ride Or Die" and "Life Will Tear Us Apart" were definite crowd pleasers, and surely favorites of mine.

Hardcore electro mixed with riot grrrl antics mixed with post-punk mixed with hip hop would be a pretty good - if not lengthy - description for what occurred on and around the stage at Le Baron. From the pink plush groupies on stage, to the crystallized microphone, to the mini mosh pit that erupted around me, Heartsrevolution christened the debut night of Le Baron's Encore! Monday concert series like no other could dare to.

Frontwoman Lo, dressed in a powder pink leather jacket, custom pink platform Chucks, schoolgirl skirt, and crystal suspenders was a force to be reckoned with as she commanded the stage like a seasoned pro (very impressive considering how long ago the last show was). I'm fairly certain that at one point I even turned to my boyfriend (a fan of the likes of Green Day and A Day To Remember) and matter-of-factly remarked, "Now THIS is punk rock."

My only wish is that Heartsrevolution's set had been even longer, as the dance-punk trio put on an electric show that sparked a massive dance party and rocked Le Baron to its chic guest-list only rafters. And while I'm excited to see what other artists and bands the new club has booked for its Encore! series, here's hoping that Heartsrevolution gets an encore of their own.

'Fuck U Betta': New Neon Hitch Single Drops Today

Australian DJ sister duo Mim and Liv - best known by their stage name Nervo - have been tearing up the charts and dancefloors the past few weeks with their breakout smash "We're All No One." Katy B At Drom NYC (1/25)

What do you get when you cross-pollinate the street swag of early Lily Allen, the twinkling electro pop of Ellie Goulding, and the 90's urban-rave aesthetic of Crystal Waters? Why, you get the UK based dubstep/dancehall Queen Bee herself, Katy B! And the crowd was certainly buzzing last night as Katy hit her last US stop on tour at hip downtown lounge Drom in NYC.

The adorable redheaded dance-pop princess, whose debut album 'On A Mission' blew up last year with its electro, funk-house, and dubstep influences, was all smiles throughout the night as she took to the small stage in front of a crowd of fans eager to dance until the lights came on.

Katy kicked off her set with "Louder," one of my favorites off her album, and the crowd was more than happy to give Katy what she wanted, literally getting louder and louder as the pint-sized pop star bounced around the stage.

The tiny powerhouse blasted through an electric set that included fan favorites like girl anthem "Easy Please Me" and "Broken Record," playfully chatting with the audience and even throwing out free merchandise into the crowd. Memorably, "Witches Brew" was just as mesmerizing live as it is on the record, and Katy clearly had everyone under her spell as she crooned through the witchy, twinkly electro-pop track.

The chanteuse slowed things down a bit on soulful r&b-tinged tracks "Power On Me" and "Disappear," but the night was far from low on energy, especially when Katy launched into dance-funk club hit "Lights On," Katy commanding the stage with ease and encouraging the obedient crowd to dance.

Finally, Katy closed her set with the track that started it all, hit single "Katy On A Mission," to which the crowd went absolutely wild, singing along passionately, and which Katy performed with bonafide pop star swag, thanking the crowd excitedly for purchasing her album and dedicating the song to all of her supporters. Katy capped off the night by sweetly thanking the crowd again, blowing kisses to her fans, and telling the crowd to "get home safe!"

Despite the small stage and intimate lounge venue, Katy B put on an extremely electric show, with naught but a DJ and charming MC backing her up throughout the night. She bewitched the crowd with her adorable personality, energetic stage swag, explosive dance-pop catalogue, and her very impressive vocal chops. If you have a chance to check her out live, I highly recommend you do so!

'Dancing Shoes': Sweet New Dev Video

Californian electro-rap cutie Dev, whose debut album 'The Night The Sun Came Up' is scheduled to hit the USA like a ton of polished pop bricks on March 27, recently dropped the super sweet (we're talking saccharine here, folks) video for her new single "Dancing Shoes."

The twinkling electro-pop track starts off with Dev primping in a dressing room behind a stage, and we cut back and forth between her and a cute, chubby guy in a rainbow tutu similarly getting ready. Soon Dev slides into her seat in the audience and the male dancer takes the stage with some unique dance moves, much to the ill-intentioned amusement of the judgemental audience. Suddenly, as the dancer is about to fall victim to a prank from one of the audience members, the empathetic (and gorgeous, might I add) Dev jumps up to the rescue. The result is a simple, poignant, and sweet no-frills video.

Dynamite: Mysterious New Sky Ferriera Track Appears

Electro-pop's resident princess-in-waiting Sky Ferreira, whose debut album has been long-awaited, surprised anxious fans tonight with a brand new track (well, actually, according to her Facebook page it's really an old demo she's never been able to release). The untitled as-of-yet track that for now we're going to call "We're Dymanite," based off the explosive chorus, is a bouncy, shiny, indie-tinged synth-pop jam with an infectious, tropical beat and chanting bits that will have you dancing in the sun! Sky also revealed tonight that her debut album is finally due out come 2012, with a single set to launch early Spring. Hopefully, Sky won't stray too far from her dance-pop leanings altogether. But either way, she's a talented force that will no doubt release incredible music, no matter the genre or sound!

Celebrity DJ and recording artist Taryn Manning recently launched into orbit two new hyper-cool lo-fi music videos. One is for her latest single, "Moonwalk" (previously known as "Spotlight"), which has gone under a bit of an aural facelift since its last incarnation. This version features heavy pulsating synths, a little disco sprinkled in for good measure, and a bit of stadium-trance oomph to give the track that extra push. The video finds Taryn playing with sparklers and plunging into a pool for a night swim in full makeup! You can watch the video here.

Meet Lola Blanc, the super colorful raven-haired beauty that is absolutely going to be your new favorite electro-poppin' electrocutie. The Los Angeles based pop up-and-comer debuted a new electro-pop track today called "You Like Me," and it is instantly infectious!

The song starts with a twinkling synth-pop intro, Lola cooing "la la la" atop the beats as they build before the track suddenly topples into a heavy wobbling dubstep drop (a tasteful one, unlike some other awkwardly-placed dubstep homages in pop songs). But the fun really starts when the chorus kicks in, Lola listing off all her less attractive habits ("I'm demanding, I'm stubborn, my makeup's all running!") and singing, "But you really, really like me." You've got that right.

'Black Magic': The Green Children Release New Video

Fantasy synth-pop band The Green Children offered fans yesterday quite the magical Halloween treat indeed: a brand new music video for their latest single, "Black Magic." The video marks the end of a trilogy in single releases ("Life Was Beautiful" released in '09, and "Dragons" in '10), and wraps up the legend of the Green Children in beautiful narrative style.

Get Banished To 'Siberia': Lights Sophomore Album Review

Since her debut in ‘09, Canadian electro-pop artist Lights has lit up like a firework and skyrocketed, with countless sold-out tours, collaborations, remixes, single releases, and an acclaimed acoustic EP. And yet, even with what seems to be a non-stop bout of activity for the tireless singer-songwriter, almost two years later to the day Lights has managed to release a gem-filled treasure-chest of a sophomore album.

In short, ‘Siberia,’ released October 4th, finds Lights a changed woman. Altogether, the lyrics are more poetic, the artist more certain of herself, and the production more raw. Gone is the cotton candy synth-pop of her previous album, and in its place is a record brimming with experimental, gritty electro-rock - with just a light dusting of sugar on top to sweeten the deal.

The album kicks off with the titular track, “Siberia,” a chilly, fizzy electronic lo-fi jam that hints coyly at the gritty undertone of the rest of the record. Here we find Lights’ glossy, candy-coated vocals once again, but this time not bouncing atop an equally glossy synth-pop ballad, but instead woven melodically through a heavily distorted mid-tempo bass-line.

“Where The Fence Is Low” finds the pop starlet in familiar territory at first, with a sparkling intro and emotionally-driven lyrics that hearken back to her first album. But suddenly the track surrenders into a heavy crescendo of gurgling, throbbing beats. The song comes to a head during an epic breakdown where beats clash, Lights’ ever-pleading vocals soaring overhead, and ends with a very cool drum outro.

Up next is “Toes,” the lead single off ‘Siberia,’ and with good reason: With a twinkling intro reminiscent of “Saviour,” the toe-tapping track nestles into a comfortable, yet exciting balance between polish and grit, a crown-jewel of electro-pop found within the trove of the album. A stomping beat anchors the track, and sing-along lyrics solidify “Toes” as a proper hit.

“Banner” begins with a bubbling 8-bit synth-line that builds into the swirling, upbeat melody that follows the rest of the track. Much like the object the track is titled after, “Banner” raises higher and higher until the chorus, where Lights’ swaying vocals explode as she cries out: “Like a banner!” It’s a quietly epic track which relies less on big beats and more on soulful lyrics, anthemic progression, and a head-bobbing melody.

Twinkling synths fade into glitchy, industrial beats on hip-hop inspired “Everybody Breaks A Glass,” one of the more experimental tracks on the record, featuring a dub-step breakdown mid-track, along with an even bigger surprise: a rapping interlude by Canadian rapper Shad. The rap is a big shock for Lights’ fans and is slightly disorienting at first, but Shad skips the club-references and instead delivers appropriately emotional material that fits in surprisingly well with the overall tone of the song.

A relaxed r&b drum-line kicks off “Heavy Rope,” which features some of Lights’ most poetic lyrics to date. It’s an understated, emotional track that plays a little sleepy, but is a welcome break in the glitch and grit of the rest of the album, allowing the artist’s inspiring vocals to shine unaltered and unhinged.

A short and sweet music-box synth starts off “Peace Sign,” which quickly evolves into a playful, zippy electro-hippie pop song. It’s an upbeat, happy track that plays much like a quirky, dancey pop-rock jam, with a jump-on-your-bed melody that will have you smiling and signing along instantly.

“Cactus In The Valley” is a wistful electro-lullaby which finds Lights cooing breathily over a sleepy, echoing beat. It’s a quiet, thoughtful ballad that skips the dance floor entirely and flips the focus back onto the artist’s achingly emotional vocal chops and lyrical poetry.

Glistening synths drive the beginning of my favorite track, the expertly produced “Suspension.” An epic trance-bathed club-track, “Suspension” sounds like something that would play at the climax of a robot apocalypse. Throbbing, industrial synths build until the massive dubstep breakdown that the track has been hinting at. Lights’ vocals are haunting here, almost detached from the seams of the music entirely, as if she is floating away or simply, perhaps, “not close enough.”

“Flux and Flow” starts with a wobbling, static bass that follows the rest of the track, coming to a climax nicely during the high-hitting chorus. Again, hip-hop artist Shad is featured during a slightly awkward, but still welcome interlude. It’s a slower jam that speaks to a sense of give and take, a theme that is reflected musically throughout the heavy, up-and-down melody of the song.

A mildly gritty beat defines “Fourth Dimension,” a slow electronic song that falls a little limp at first when compared to the bangers found through the album as a whole. Luckily, the track finds its feet midway through a very inspired dubstep breakdown, the beats melting into a puddle of thick and gooey whomps and wonks, testifying again to a certain level of experimentalism on the record.

Next up is “And Counting…" which features a humming synth-line and mild vocals that fail to fluctuate, though fit well with the tone. It’s a pretty, wispy song that sounds somewhat like a digital lullaby, with light touches of an Imogen Heap vibe, but it can also sound a bit repetitive and tends to flatline after the first minute or so.

The album closes with “Day One,” a nine-minute musical experiment that seems to take every influence off ‘Siberia’ and clash them together in a gurgling symphony of electro noise. It’s an eerie piece that sounds almost like the buzzing hum of a chapel organ, slowly progressing into a blipping, beeping robo-urban soundscape. Though grating after a while, it’s quite interesting and definitely worth a listen. It’s a special track that closes the record well and, in a way, poetically.

Ever-changing and ever-evolving, Lights never manages to amaze with the progression she is capable of as an artist, whether musically, vocally, or lyrically. Fusing the melodic glimmer of pop, the raw power of new-wave rock, the excitement of electronica, and the glitchy imperfection of dubstep, she has created a whole new world on her second album, one listeners should be eager and open to explore. Just two years after ‘The Listening,’ it seems our electro chanteuse has floated away from her celestial, spacey synth-pop origins, and has found herself back down to earth in gritty ‘Siberia.’ And it’s a great place to get banished to, if you ask me.

With her sparkling neo-punk duds, shiny jet black hair, and big doe eyes, Zowie is the kind of artist that draws you in with her sweet pop charade, just to chew you up, spit you back out, and leave you begging for more.

Case in point? Check out the new video (and latest single) from the synth-pop pixie called "Smash It." Watch as Zowie takes command of an empty, neon-bathed high-school and stomps around (in candy-colored Docs and glittery JC Litas, no less) with a baseball bat, claiming her turf. Sky Ferreira At Teen Vogue's FNO (9/08)

A few weeks ago, I made my way out to Teen Vogue’s super fun SoHo block party held on Thursday, September 8th, for Fashion’s Night Out. Amidst the red-carpet glamour (like an appearance by the gorgeously in-shape Ciara) and mingling with Teen Vogue editors, I was able to check out up-and-coming electro-pop artist Sky Ferreira in an exclusive performance!

Dressed in a fresh white tank blouse, high-waist black skirt, and fun sequin bow collar, the young pop starlet wooed the equally young crowd of chic teen fashionistas with a short but appetizing acoustic set including one cover song and two unreleased tracks. Simply armed with a microphone and a guitarist at her side, the blonde bombshell cooed her way through each track, giggling and smiling to the crowd nervously between songs.

Though the synth-pop princess-in-waiting is known for her edgy, bubbly brand of electronica-tinged pop music, it was refreshing to hear the pouty teen’s surprisingly soulful, stripped down performance, which truly showed off the beautiful range in her voice. First, Sky launched into a lovely rendition of John Frusciante’s “The Past Recedes,” followed by two original, unreleased tracks tentatively called “Ghost is Gone” and “The Werewolf Song,” the latter of which I can't wait to hear a studio version of.

Though a short set, Sky gave just enough to pique the audience’s interest and prove that even without the lush electronic soundscapes, she is a pop force to be paid attention to. Naturally, I can’t wait to see and hear what Sky has in store for the future - and hopefully that will include many more performances!

Neon Hitch At Splash Bar NYC (5/20)

I was able to catch electro-pop vixen Neon Hitch perform at the fabulous Splash Bar in NYC this past Friday after winning a spot on the guest-list during her Twitter contest. After a few hours of drinking and dancing until the end of the world - literally, as the clock struck midnight while I was on the dance-floor and judgment day was suddenly upon us club-goers - the only rapture I experienced was when Neon hit the stage at around 1 am.

Clad in a sexy black leotard, tattered white fishnets, a handmade white one-shoulder feathered epaulette, and glittering platform heeled booties, the flame-haired pop gypsy wobbled onstage as her new jungle-electro record “Silly Girl” exploded from the speakers, her sexy band of gypsies accompanying her with their tribal drums.

After tossing off her feathered headdress (also handmade, as she explained to me later in the evening) and treating the crowd to glow-sticks - I immediately fastened mine into a chic headband - Neon began to seduce the eager, bobbing crowd with her sultry gyrations, booty-shaking, and acrobatic dance moves, all the while singing along fervently to her new track “Silly Girl” as it blasted from the venue’s speakers.

When the song ended, the fierce songstress greeted the crowd with a cheerful and excitedly received, “What’s up, Splash?” Grabbing a chain leash, Neon then called up on stage her “bad dog” of the evening, one of the hot, scantily-clad male entertainers that had been dancing on the bar-top earlier, who promptly assumed the position on all fours as the pop-star fastened the collar around his neck.

The bass thumping, Neon blasted into her upcoming single “Bad Dog,” a crowd-pleaser that quickly had the whole venue thumping along as she sang lines like, “I’m ‘a put you down / Bang, bang, like a bad dog.” Soon enough, the baddest bitch around mounted her “bad dog” on stage and, much to the thrill of the audience, began to ride him, all before popping back up to dance, her lucky victim trailing behind her like a lovesick puppy throughout the performance.

After the track ended Neon playfully told the crowd, “So, apparently the world is gonna end tomorrow, and if that’s true, we’ve got a lot of fucking to do tonight!” The audience cheered, and as the music roared up again, she launched into my absolute favorite track, the explosive “Fuck You Better.” Taking command of the tiny stage, the sexy pop-warbler strutted and perched at the railing, belting out her catchy, bratty hook, “She can fuck you good / But I can fuck you better!”

Pausing only to toss out some colorful glowing beach balls into the crowd in the middle of the song, Neon immediately sprung back into the infectious track as the strobe lights began flashing, dancers flooded the stage, and the songstress fell into an impressive split, bobbing to the bass and posing sensuously as “Fuck You Better” came to an end. Her band of gypsies still drumming away, the singer thanked the crowd and exited the stage.

After her performance, the Silly Girl had custom-made “Neon Hitch” silly-bandz in glittery pink and purple hues dispersed to the crowd as a treat. Though a short set at only three songs, Neon Hitch completely bewitched the crowd at Splash Bar and killed it with her fierce command of the stage, her erotic dance moves, and her contagious brand of hyper electro gypsy-pop. She electrified fans old and new alike, and left me totally wanting more. If you have a chance to catch this chanteuse live sometime soon, do so! You will absolutely not regret it.

Poppin' Bottles In The Ice: An Interview With Dev

A few months ago I had the chance to chat it up with Dev, currently known around the world for that infectiously sexy hook in the Far East Movement hit single “Like A G6,” and much like her musical peer Kesha, who was known before her iconic “Tik Tok” days as the memorable and mysterious female voice in Flo Rida’s 2009 smash “Right Round,” Dev is about to launch into superstardom in her own right. Check out below what Dev had to say about working with her best friends, The Cataracs, what to expect from her upcoming electro-pop album, and how she went from Garageband to “G6!”

E: Hi, Dev! This is Erica with Electrocutie Music Blog. How are you?

D: I’m good, thank you! I’m actually in Los Angeles right now.

E: So, why don’t we start with a little background information. What is your story, so to speak?

D: Sure! Well, my real name is Devin and I’m 21 years old. I grew up in Manteca, California, which is like central, northern California. I started music about three years ago when I posted a song up on MySpace that I made on GarageBand on my MacBook, and it was found by The Cataracs! So they called me up and said, “Dev, you should come and record with us, we love your sound!” Fast forward a little bit, I decided to keep recording, leave school, and quit my job and move to Los Angeles with The Cataracs so I could continue my musical dreams. Then we did “Like A G6” with Far East Movement. And that’s kind of how that all happened!

E: Wow! So you have come a long way from GarageBand, that’s for sure.

D: [Laughs.] Yes, I owe it to GarageBand.

E: Now, don’t you have like three songs or something on the Billboard Hot 100 chart right now?

D: I do! It’s so exciting and I actually forgot, so thanks for reminding me. It’s amazing, absolutely amazing. Being part of that whole process of having those three records on the Billboard charts is pretty dope.

E: Congratulations! That must be a really huge moment for you.

D: It was. It was absolutely insane. I have some favorite artists who I remember talking to about the situation and them going, “Yeah, I’ve been on the Billboard charts six times in my whole career,” or whatever, and so to have my name on three songs on the charts all at one time is pretty badass!

E: Now, from what I’ve heard, your upcoming debut album is called ‘The Night The Sun Came Up.’ Is that going to be the title of a song or does that title have any special significance or meaning to you or for the album?

D: Sure! My whole album is filled with a bunch of little stories about me and The Cataracs, and I got to sit down with the boys for three weeks in Costa Rica and really concentrate on all the things I wanted to get across and all the things I’ve been through during these past three years. I definitely wanted the title to reflect the stories. I didn’t just want it to be one word. It actually took me a really long time to come up with the title. I was such a girl about it! [Laughs.] There’s so many things you do at night until the sun comes up - you could be reading a book or you could be popping champagne!

E: I love it. I think it’s such a cool title and can really speak in different ways to a lot of different people. You’ve kind of made your own special little nook in the music industry - you’ve molded hip-hop, electro, rap, pop, and so many things together to make your own unique concoction. Do you like to experiment with different types of music and themes?

D: Yeah, I really do actually! And on this album me and The Cataracs really play that up. There’s a lot of different textures and tempos. There’s some parts on it where I’m just singing with a guitar and other parts where I’m rapping and it‘s very hip-hop influenced. There’s some dance stuff in there as well! I definitely like playing with different elements and sounds. I grew up with a bunch of different music and it was important to me to fit all that onto one album, to not just have one sound, but to show that I enjoy doing a little bit of everything.

E: Speaking of influences, who or what kind of styles of music have inspired you while making your album?

D: Well, going into the album, it’s not like I’m listening to anything in particular that sparks stuff. It’s maybe just a little bit of a mixture of what I grew up listening to. I have my favorites like Nirvana, Eminem, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Brand New, and I listen to a lot of Bay Area rap from Northern California. And The Cataracs, they have their favorite rappers, and one of them really likes the Beatles. So that was more important to us. It wasn’t one specific thing. It was just the fact that we wanted to take influences from many different genres.

E: I feel like the album is going to sound really cool that way, and have many different sounds. So The Cataracs are producing the album?

D: Yeah, it’s being produced by The Cataracs and some of it is featuring The Cataracs as well because there’s one or two songs I have them on. So it was important to me to keep all that within our little crew, because they found me, you know? So it’s our sound together.

E: That’s so cute! So you guys must be good friends then, no?

D: Yeah! [Laughs.] We lived together for a year and a half. We actually just moved out of our loft downtown. They’re my best friends. They know me pretty damn well. It’s cool when we go into the songwriting process and recording process because I get to work with these two people who, through the past three years, have become my best friends. They know me so well. A lot of artists are found and just placed with producers and meet for the first time and go into the studio with them. But I get to go into the studio with people who are my besties, and it works out!

E: I love that. I think it’s amazing when artists can work with someone who they’re friends with, or know, or familiar with, cause I think it adds a level of personal meaning to the music. Would you say that?

D: Oh, for sure! When I first started doing this stuff, the whole writing and recording process was so weird for me, ‘cause I didn’t have to be very personal or vulnerable and it was all new to me. But it’s cool now because we’ve grown together these past years and I feel great sharing my stories and feelings with the boys. And they know me so well that the vibe is always so perfect in the studio.

E: And that must make it really comfortable for you, too, when writing lyrics especially.

D: For sure, it’s great. It’s super comfortable.

E: Now, a little off topic, but I wanted to ask you about your sense of fashion. I noticed you have such a cool sense of style in your videos, photo-shoots, and at shows. So what is your sense of style or what influences that for you?

D: I work with and am best friends with this brand called Hellz Bellz, and they style me and fit me for pretty much everything, even when I’m shopping - you know, during the little time I get to shop, I shop with Lanie, it’s her line - and they style my videos like “Booty Bounce,” and all my shows, and that’s kind of my thing. E: I love Hellz Bellz! Anyway, back to the music: Do you know when your debut album is due out?

D: Well, it’s coming out in the summer! Summer time for sure, that’s when you can check my album out.

E: Do you plan on going on tour in support of it?

D: Yes, I have a few tours lined up right now, though I don’t wanna speak on them just yet. But I will definitely be touring around all over the place for this album. So if you want to come out, definitely check out my Facebook and Twitter. That’s probably the easiest way for people to keep updated with that. I’m on Twitter 24 hours, 7 days a week. [Laughs.]

E: What is a typical show like for you?

D: For new shows I usually play like 30 minutes. It’s a 30 minute straight mash-up of all my songs, and I like to mix it up sometimes and do something different so I’ll throw some songs by other people in. But it’s usually 30 minutes of all Dev! And I pop champagne and confetti, and if it’s a club show, it’s usually 15 minutes of all Dev.

E: That sounds like so much fun.

D: It is so fun!

E: Your show must be a big party. Lots of energy…

D: It’s really cool ’cause it’s high energy for sure, and popping champagne - everybody loves that - but I do have moments where I get to sort of be very girly and just sing. So it’s kind of fun, too. I get to play around with stuff like that.

E: I know right now you have a lot of party songs out like “Booty Bounce” and “Bass Down Low,” but I sense more depth to you also. So can we expect some ballads on the album?

D: Oh yes, of course. I guess a lot of people just see me as this person that just sings songs like “Like A G6” and “Bass Down Low.” And that’s totally cool. I love those songs and I love making them. But I’m really excited for everybody to hear the album and hear that I do have a heart and I have feelings and that I can really sing. Yeah, I’m really excited for everyone to see that other side of me.

E: Actually, I’ve listened to your song “Killer” on YouTube and I hear so much depth to your voice and you’re a really skilled vocalist. And I think it’s going to be a great surprise for people to hear that singing skill on your album, as opposed to your rapping style, which is great too, of course.

D: Thank you! Me too! That means a lot to me that you say that. That’s definitely an important thing I want to get across, so thank you.

E: Yeah, you’re very welcome. Now, I’ve heard you get compared to different artists a lot, and I’m not going to name who because to me it’s a little annoying. But I feel like it happens too often to female artists where the industry likes to clump them together and not accept them as individuals. Why do you feel this happens?

D: I feel like while it’s the industry doing it too, I think it’s really more that the people and fans in general are doing it because I think it makes people feel comfortable. They don’t feel as scared to just want to embrace something new. I think that society as a whole would rather be like, “Oh, it’s okay! Cool! We can play this, we can check this out, because it sort of sounds like this.” It’s just that comfort level because, well, everybody wants to feel comfortable, and I think that’s where it comes from. It’s just easier for people to sort of, you know, compare. It’s all good! They’re gonna do it. I mean, I do it. I really can’t hate on people who compare artists ‘cause I do it just as well. But you know, I also don’t want to be compared too much because I am my own individual, but it’s all good.

E: You have such a great attitude! It’s so refreshing and so positive. Speaking of your music, I hear so many different influences and styles in your sound, so what I want to know is, from your perspective, how would you describe your music?

D: As of right now I’m in a place where I really can’t. I like to play around so much that I change my mind every day. I think that’s what’s fun about what I do. And maybe I can’t place the album that I’m making into one genre, but I’m okay with that.

E: Today I think people are a little more open to exploring new genres of music or mixing different types of music together, so as an artist, it must be really cool to be able to do that.

D: Oh yeah, for sure. Definitely. It’s fun as an individual to be able to play around like that.

E: What can fans expect to hear from your new album?

D: People can expect to hear a lot of stories about everything like leaving my family to do this, leaving my comfort zone, and just personal stories that have happened over the past three years. I’m really excited for everybody to hear it and have a good time with it. It’s definitely very youthful, I feel, ‘cause I’m 21. I wanted it to be serious and lighthearted at the same time, and maybe a little bratty as well I guess. [Laughs.] Fans can expect a little bit of all of that.

E: It sounds very personal and honest.

D: Yeah, well, it was great because the music was something that I shared with The Cataracs on this close level and I couldn’t have asked for better people to share that experience with. It really took me to an amazing place and it gave me the opportunity to travel and spread my music and get to do everything that I’ve gotten to do as a recording artist. It was great to sit down in Costa Rica with The Cataracs and get to focus on me and write down my feelings. And some of the songs are really fun and some of them are still really personal and I definitely got the time to get that across. Also it was good to spend that time with The Cataracs because even though they found me and collaborated as producers, there was a time when we didn’t get to work together too much because they were so busy and I was so busy touring, so it was definitely the time to sit down together, and just have our time, you know?

E: Right, of course.

D: And I think you’ll hear that on the album. It’s very “Dev,” and also very “Cataracs,” because they did produce it. I think everybody is gonna have a good time with it, I hope. That’s the whole goal. And even if they don’t, I had a good time! [Laughs.]

E: That’s all that really matters. Also, I think a lot of people right now just know you as the “G6 Girl” from when you first came out, and it’s going to be really cool to finally be like, “No, I’m not just the ‘G6 Girl,’ I’m Dev,” and share that with everyone.

D: Exactly! [Laughs.] It’s definitely been a cool thing being the “G6 Girl,” and maybe when I’m 40 I’ll be able to say, “Hey! I was the ‘G6 Girl!’” But hopefully I’ll be recognized as Dev.

E: Speaking of “Like A G6,” when was that moment for you when you realized how huge that song became?

D: I had that moment the first time I heard it playing in the car on the radio. I realized that this song might change my life… Which it did!

E: So, you went from GarageBand to “G6.”

D: Exactly! [Laughs.]

E: What’s your ultimate goal as a recording artist or where do you see yourself, ideally, down the road from here?

D: You know, I’m just taking it day by day. I’m just letting it happen. So far it’s been a fun journey and hopefully I’ll keep continuing to grow, but I don’t really wanna put too much pressure on the future. I think I’m having a really good time and discovering who I am as a woman and an artist, and hopefully good things come out of it. I guess that’s the only way I want to look at it. I don’t want to put pressure on anything.

So Talented: An Interview With Taryn Manning

Just a week ago I was able to catch celebrity triple-threat Taryn Manning - actress, singer-songwriter, and fashion designer - on the phone to chat about her latest musical endeavors as a dance-pop princess. Alongside an established acting career in which she has starred in notable films such as '8 Mile,' 'Crazy/Beautiful,' and 'Hustle & Flow,' as well as in countlessa television shows, Taryn has been hard at work carving out a neon-bathed career for herself in the music biz as one half of brother/sister electro duo Boomkat.

Now, as Taryn gears up for the release of her solo dance-oriented album this year, this Hollywood It Girl is finally stepping out into the spotlight as a pop star in her own right. Read what Taryn had to say about her latest throbbing electro-pop single "Turn It Up," how she finds time to balance three very different careers, as well as two music projects and DJing, and what to expect from her debut album due out this year. Check it out:

E: Hey, Taryn! This is Erica with Electrocutie Music Blog. Nice to finally meet you! How are you?

T: I’m good. How are you? Sorry if I seem a little bit tired, I actually hurt my back.

E: Oh, no worries! I hope you feel better soon. Let’s jump right into this then. I guess the first thing I really want to ask is can you give us a little crash course on your story for those who don’t know about you?

T: Well, I’ve been doing singing and dancing and that kind of stuff since I was a little girl, you know. I grew up in a family where my dad was a musician, and my mom was a dancer, and my grandma was a tap dancer, so it just sort of seemed like I was meant to do this kind of thing. My mom supported me since I was a little girl and I took dance classes and singing and karate and just everything! And that’s basically how I started - I just started at a really young age.

E: That’s amazing. So it’s really been something that’s been with you from the very start.

T: Yeah, I’ve definitely been doing this a really long time.

E: Now, you also juggle an established acting career along with being a musician and a designer, among other things. How do you balance all of this? Do you find that each aspect influences the other in certain ways?

T: Um, yeah! I mean, they do. It’s hard to balance everything sometimes, and other times it’s fun! And sometimes it comes at the perfect timing. It just balances out. Like, sometimes I’m off acting but I also have music to promote, and then when I have music to promote, I’m off acting.

E: Do you find that, as a person who is engaged and successful in more than one creative industry that there are any frustrations related to being both a singer and an actress?

T: Yeah, you know, I know there’s some people who probably won’t even listen to my music because they know who I am, and there’s some people that only know me because of my music. And I really have real fans, musically speaking, and sometimes they crossover - they’ll learn about my music through my acting and vice-versa, and then sometimes people just don’t like you. But most of the time people hit me up and tell me how much they love my music, and that it’s heard all over the world! But it could still be much bigger, I think, you know?

E: So then are you still waiting for that moment in your music career where you can say to yourself, “I’ve made it!”?

T: Absolutely! It takes a lot of hard work. But I try not to totally think too much about that outcome, because I try to enjoy the journey, as cliché as that sounds, and I try not to obsess on when I make it. I just sort of believe in my heart that my music is really great and that this record is amazing. I’ve put the last two years of my soul into it and I truly think that it’s up there with all the stuff that’s relevant right now.

E: I love that you said it’s more about the journey. I don’t think that’s cliché at all. And on that line, I know you started Boomkat with your brother in 2003, so how do you think you have you evolved as a musician over the past decade or so?

T: I think that my songwriting has changed, and the style, and maybe even the quality in my voice has matured. When I was really young, I was very wild, kind of punk rock or hip hop, and I would go up on stage put out a lot of energy. And as I’ve gotten older I’ve become more calm and confident and my vocals have become better on stage when I’m not being quite so physical. I used to run around the stage and not have any breath left to sing with! [Laughs.] And I’d learn my lesson when I was done and off the stage. I’d go, “Ugh! God, I couldn‘t even sing, I was so out of breath! Okay, next show I can’t go on like that.” But then next time I’d get up on stage and I’d see all the people and I would go wild, you know? So, just stuff like that has changed. But yeah, I think my music has gotten better, like with input when I work with my producers. The music gets better, and they respect me, so it’s like a collaboration now. And I play guitar, too - I’m not just a singer, I’m a songwriter as well. I’m involved with the entire process.

E: Are the creative processes between your solo music and your music with Boomkat very different?

T: Um, I would say that Boomkat is a little more experimental, a little more lo-fi. I mean, it’s pop at times, but it was really hard to figure out the sound of Boomkat. Our very first record, I still believe, stands the test of time, and I still have fans that still listen to that record all the time and I think it could have even been ahead of its time way back in 2003.

E: Yeah, I would say that.

T: It was dance music, but it wasn’t quite pop format and it wasn’t quite rock format, and our label didn’t know which avenue to take with it. It’s always been like a crazy sound that we came up with and now my sound is definitely pop but I put my own flair into it, and I think it sounds different than others. That’s the name of the game, you know - trying to create something that hasn’t been done.

E: I remember when I bought my first Boomkat CD at the Virgin Megastore. What drew me to it was the cover, but I’m glad it did, ‘cause I still listen to it all the time. And I’m so happy you’re still doing music and still going strong!

T: Aw, sweet! Me too. I’m so happy that I have music coming out. Nothing makes me more happy than when I’m doing my music. I love acting - don’t get me wrong, I’ve really enjoyed some of the roles I’ve played. Sometimes there’s not a whole lot of cool roles for actresses, so I’m glad I have my music to show my heart!

E: And I guess you probably get to be a little more personal with the music.

T: Yeah, it’s super personal. What’s cool about it is it’s all me, you know? You can define yourself through your music and your sound.

E: Speaking of new music, you just released “Turn It Up” - which is amazing, by the way.

T: Oh, thank you!

E: You must be so excited that it’s out finally! Can you tell us a little bit about the new track?

T: Ah, it’s really just a fun, upbeat, happy party song! I mean, it really exists for the sole purpose to get everyone to have a good time. It’s not that deep, it’s not that emotional. It has kind of a sexy vibe - the vocals are a little distorted, it has a little bit of an electro, indie kind of beat. It was really hard to choose the first single, but I just thought that I wanted to start off with this one.

E: So then you’re working on your debut album right now, is that right?

T: Yeah, it’s pretty much done! I’m not just going to release the whole thing though, because it’s taken a long time and it’s a big body of work that I’ve put a lot of effort into, so I want to roll it out really slowly. I want people to really hear this album, you know? And not just put it all out there, because it’s really hard to get peoples’ attention with too many songs at once these days.

E: You have to reel them in.

T: Yeah, I just wanna hook ‘em in and make them believers! It takes time, you know?

E: And a lot of hard work.

T: Definitely.

E: So do you think the album will drop this year?

T: Oh yeah, actually, this year for sure! Definitely. I just don’t have a date - I’m just going to keep releasing singles throughout the summer and kinda keep it going that way. But I have a whole album, so definitely this year, one-hundred percent!

E: And will tracks like “So Talented,” “Spotlight,” and “Turn It Up” all be on the album?

T: Um, I think so, yeah! I mean, I’ve written some new songs since then. I’m always writing. I’m always in the studio - it’s my favorite place to be - so I’m always writing, and I did those a while ago, but I know people love those songs, so I might include them in the album.

E: That’s good. Are you thinking about touring when the album releases? Do you think you’ll go on a national tour or anything?

T: I’d love to, yeah. I really would. I really believe that that’s going to happen for sure. I mean, we’re putting this album together now. My management team and I, we’re just going to see what the demand is for it. I’m all about letting people find me. I don’t wanna shove it down their throat. It’s so good, this music, that I just want to let it organically spread.

E: I think doing it that way makes for more long-term, dedicated listeners, instead of just throwing it out at people.

T: Exactly! Like, dedicated fans. I feel the same way. And I’m really excited about that, you know?

E: You also DJ, right?

T: Yeah, I do.

E: So, creatively, how does that fit in with your career as a singer and musician?

T: Yeah, I mean, I’m not an amazing DJ, but I DJ sometimes because I like to throw my own music into the set. And it’s sort of like a DJ set mixed with a little performance. It’s not like I’m dancing or anything - well, I am dancing around - but I’ll play my stuff and if there’s a mike I’ll sing along and put on a mini show, and so it goes hand in hand with my own projects.

E: Now that you’re full steam ahead with Taryn Manning music, do you think there will be a third Boomkat record in store for the future?

T: Sure! My brother and I have amazing new material. It’s just a matter of me promoting this, and putting all my heart and soul into this right now because I’ve been working on this for years. And when I’m done with this, I’m definitely going to get back into the Boomkat stuff and keep making music until the day I die. I love it!

E: Are there any dream collaborations or particular people you would love to work with someday?

T: Yeah, there is, for sure. Certain producers, like… I wish I could work with Deadmau5, Dr. Luke, or Max Martin, and all those people who have these huge hits on the radio. It’d be fun! And I have worked with some amazing people, but those are just the ones I’d like to work with right now.

E: You seem to keep very close with your fan base through various social networking sites online, allowing an open channel of personal communication. Are your fans very important to you?

T: Well, thee ones that are kind and the ones that are so complimentary to me and take the time to reach out and say something to me like that, it really means a lot. It’s really sweet and I sometimes reply through Twitter or Facebook if I’m there and I have a moment. I try to thank everyone who compliments me. I try but I can’t do it all day long . I definitely think our careers are shaped by our fans. I know some people who don’t like all that stuff though. Look, it’s not always fun when sometimes runs up and makes a spectacle of you and one person yells, “Hey! It’s so-and-so!” and a bunch of other people start in. There’s certain times where it’s not fun but I think when it comes to music you really have to be there for your fans. They’ll, like, die for you. Well, not really. [Laughs.] They’ll go above and beyond!

E: Now, you’re also an accomplished designer, and I actually have one of your Born Uniqorn dresses…

T: You do!? Thank you! I love that. Which one do you have?

E: It’s rainbow-striped, with a frilly skirt…

T: Oh, yeah! I love that! [Laughs.] That’s like one of the first things we ever designed… So cute!

E: [Laughs.] Well, you have such an interesting and refreshing, fun take on fashion, and you’re definitely a style icon in your own right. What inspires your style and how would you describe it?

T: My style is so all over the place. What is it? [Laughs.] Well, you’ve seen Born Uniqorn, and that rainbow dress. I used to dress like that in my 20’s. Everything was very bright, rainbows... I wasn’t self-conscious of my body at all, so I wore a lot of midriff-cut tops, and it was very 80’s rocker style. Then as I’ve matured I’ve gotten a lot into vintage and into pretty, more girly clothes, but I always have that tomboy twist. I just do. And then there’s always that little hint of the musician in me. It’s really hard for me to hide that. My style is very based around my music. But also I keep it tame because of the actress in me. I’m not gimmicky. I’m not into costumes. I love dressing up, but I don’t really like costumes and having to be expected to be that over the top all the time. I’ll hit the stage in my jeans and a flannel and be like, “This is my mood tonight.” I don’t want to put on my cupcake or my big candy cane. I just can’t. [Laughs.] My style just changes from day to day.

E: As a musician, what is your ultimate goal? Where would you like to see yourself or your career down the road? What is the big plan for you?

T: I just want to keep writing songs and hope that they get out there and heard. You know, the big plan is just to keep doing what I do and just let the stars align - keep doing movies, incorporating my music into film, musicals, who knows? I want to do it all with my life. I just put one foot in front of the other every day. I do have a plan in my head, I just can’t really articulate it. It’s a vision. And it looks really nice!

E: Gotcha. So finally, is there anything you’d like to say to your fans before we wrap this up?

T: Yeah, just keep looking out for my songs as they come out and spread the word if they love them. And if they don’t, that’s fine. I’m just really excited to have new music out, and I have a film coming out soon called ‘The Perfect Age of Rock N’ Roll’ for everybody to look out for. It’s really good, and it is a music related film, so that’s really cool!

E: Looking forward to that for sure. Well, thank you so much Taryn! I’ve been a big fan for years now and you have been such a sweetheart. I’m so happy for your success. Thank you so much and good luck to you.

T: I’m so glad we were able to chat! Thank you so much.

'Sake' Bomb: Electro Duo Jupiter Debuts New Music Video

European electro disco duo Jupiter recently released a cute, dancey video for their latest synthy single, "Sake." Meshing groovy, retro funk with hip, modern dance, Jupiter is the rare kind of band that is cool without really trying too hard to be, well, cool. Case in point? Check out the fun, colorful, tongue-in-cheek video below for "Sake," featuring a super kawaii Japanese game-show style dance battle!
